I have been writing Malayalam songs since 2010 — for cinema, and for devotional albums that live outside it. The work is made in the hills of Munnar, far from the studios, and finds its way to them anyway.

Roy Puramadam has been writing Malayalam songs since around 2010 — for cinema, and across a steady run of devotional albums released independently of any film.

He works from Munnar rather than from inside the industry in Kochi, which has shaped both the pace and the character of the writing. His film credits run from 12 a.m. and Senior Mandrake in 2010, through Pathu Kalpanakal and Koppayile Kodumkattu in 2016, to Big Salute in 2019.

For 12 a.m. he contributed the Malayalam verses to a patriotic song rendered in twenty-four languages, along with six further songs for the film.

A song has to be sung before it is read. Whether it is written for a film or for a prayer, the test is the same — can an ordinary person sing it without stumbling? If the words fight the tune, the words are wrong, however well they read on paper.
